Flooring installation
Installing flooring yourself can be a rewarding project, but there are definitely some steps involved. Here’s a general overview of the process:
Preparation:
- Choose your flooring: There are many options available, such as laminate, hardwood, vinyl, and tile. Each has its own installation process.
- Acclimate the flooring: Most flooring materials need to adjust to the temperature and humidity of the room before installation. Read the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.
- Prepare the subfloor: The subfloor needs to be clean, level, and smooth. You may need to repair uneven spots, remove old flooring, or lay down a vapor barrier.
Installation:
- Install the underlayment: This padding goes between the subfloor and the new flooring and provides soundproofing, moisture protection, and a smoother surface.
- Start the first row: Plan out your installation direction and layout. Many flooring types use a tongue and groove system where the planks click together.
- Continue laying the planks: Work your way across the room, tapping the planks together securely. You may need to cut planks to fit around obstacles.
- Install around edges and trim: Use a jigsaw or circular saw to cut planks to fit around doorways and other features.
Finishing Touches:
- Install shoe molding: This covers the expansion gap between the floor and the wall.
- Clean the floor: Sweep or vacuum the floor according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
